Birth Control and Insurance Companies

The trouble with the United States is that we don’t seem to settle our arguments and move on. Today’s flogged dead horse is the age old question of birth control for women and who should pay for it.

The opinions on birth control are so polarized that only two solutions will work.  If you want to use birth control go ahead and use it.  Your insurance is going to cover it and nobody has a right to tell you what to do with your body.

If you do not want to use birth control, by all means don’t use it. This is American and nobody can tell you what to do with your body. Yes, insurance pays for it because it is an FDA approved medication and it is legal to use in the U.S.

If you are a Catholic you are already using birth control (besides the rhythm method). The latest polls show that 98 percent of Catholic women are ignoring the priests, bishops and Pope. They are on or have used birth control during their child bearing years.

If 98 percent of Catholic women are using birth control, the church needs to rethink how they are going to handle family planning. The flock is no longer listening and the Catholic church has become impotent.

Should the church pay for birth control when it is against their family planning doctrine? Absolutely. If employees of a Catholic institution get their insurance through their employer, then birth control must be covered because it is an approved drug and it is legal.

You can not discriminate against non-Catholics in the work place by blocking their access to legal medications just because you believe it is wrong.

The days of parents birthing a dozen babies are over. It is hard enough to raise 2.5 children let alone a baker’s dozen. I also have some news for the Pope.  Unless a married couple is only going to have sex 2.5 times during their 50-year marriage, your family planning ideas won’t work.

It must be noted that doctors prescribe birth control for a number of off label conditions such as: ovarian cysts; acne; heavy menstruation cycles; severe cramping and other needs.

It is time that Americans and their institutional leaders stop flogging dead horses. We must find solutions for the problems we face in society. There is virtue in compromise, logic and reason.

  3. As a woman, it is amazing to me that primarily men – who do not take birth control pills (and who benefit from women taking birth control pills for the most part – otherwise they would be using a less preferred method of birth control) and who do not have to face unwanted pregnancies w/in their own bodies, are the ones making these decisions for us. The Catholic Church has told Catholic women that it is immoral to use any birth control besides the rhythm method. (Ask any strictly practicing Catholic woman with 12 children how well that works!) The issue may be religious freedom and not contraception (as many who are arguing the other side of this will say.) Well, how about The Church jumping into the 21st Century and recognizing that birth control is a fact of life and if they were not living in some male-dominated bubble? They may just have to recognize that more birth control = less unwanted pregnancies = less abortions. Isn’t that the bigger issue here???? Antiquated religious edicts have no place in the 21st Century! The Church should embrace women’s rights to determine whether they want to get pregnant in the first place or not!!! Where are the Catholic women who should be in an uproar about this?
